A larb salad on a black plate, next to a Laotian cocktail stick flag on a wooden table.

Laab – The Harley Café, The Welbeck Estate

Walk around the streets of Vientiane, the Laotian capital, and it’s likely you’d find Laab – alternatively spelled larb or larp – on every menu. As the country’s national dish you’d expect nothing less, and tucking into laab (£12) at The Harley Café, Welbeck, I could easily see why this meal has such a high […]

New York Deli Sandwich – Elma’s Cafe & Kitchen, Sheffield

The city of New York is famous for a lot of things: stunning architecture, big business, and of course, delicious food. There are plenty of iconic dishes that have become synonymous with the City of Dreams – from sloppy pizza slices, to puffy bagels – but the king of them all (at least in my

Chicken Chow Mein on a white plate, next to a Chinese flag cocktail stick.

Chicken Chow Mein – Orchid Cafe, Sherwood

OK, so what’s a Chicken Chow Mein doing on The Tribudishional Food Blog? Granted, it’s a pretty common dish, and probably graces the menu of your local Chinese takeaway. It might even be your go-to meal when you have a takeout – it’s certainly one of mine. But that’s just it… Sherwood’s Orchid Cafe isn’t

A 'Tres Leches' Mexican pudding on a white plate next to a Mexican cocktail stick flag.

Tres Leches Cake – The Harley Café, The Welbeck Estate

There’s no beating about the bush here; the title translates to ‘three milks’, a perfectly succinct description of the cake’s star ingredients: evaporated milk, condensed milk and whole milk. That’s bad news for those who aren’t a fan of milk.

A brown stew chicken dish, complete with rice and flatbread, next to a Jamaican cocktail stick flag.

Brown Stew Chicken – Friar Tuck, Arnold

A hearty stew is probably what first comes to mind when you hear the pub name ‘Friar Tuck’. Most likely a heavy British one too, complete with root vegetables, stodgy dumplings and tough meat. Whatever the case, it won’t be the classic Jamaican stew I found in this otherwise unassuming Nottingham tavern. Brown Stew Chicken

Moussaka, garlic bread and salad on a white plate. The plate is on a wooden table, next to a set of cutlery, and a cocktail stick Greek flag.

Moussaka – The Bread and Bitter, Mapperley

When a friend recommended I try the Moussaka at The Bread and Bitter pub in Mapperley, Nottingham, I was both visibly excited, and profoundly intrigued. I’d trawled through too many pub menus to keep count of, seeing the usual burger-and-chips pub grub, and Castle Rock Brewery’s menus had so far disappointed. Yet here it was,

Beef stroganoff and basmati rice in a bowl, a garlic bread baguette on a plate, a wine cork, Russian flag cocktail stick, and cutlery.

Beef Stroganoff – The Avenues Cafe, Nottingham

Picture the menu at your typical workaday cafe. There’s probably going to be a Full English, bacon sandwich, the odd panini… but Beef Stroganoff? That’s fancy restaurant material, surely? Let’s see how the stroganoff at The Avenues Cafe in Nottingham fared. The makeup of this classic Russian dish is fairly simple: sautéed pieces of beef
